Essex County Vol. 1 TALES FROM THE FARM by Jeff Lemire

TALES FROM THE FARM is a graphic novel about a ten year old boy's, Lester, experience living in a single family home with his uncle after the death of his mom. The story takes place in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.

Lester and his uncle have not bonded. The uncle is unable to relate to Lester. On a trip to the gas station, The owner makes a kind gesture by giving Lester a comic book and finding his interst. Lester and Jimmy, a former hockey player, have a common interest. Jimmy is able to connect to Lester and build a special creative relationship which aids in Lester's transitioning.

Lemire uses different elements to show the passing of time one example is using the seasons. The story starts in the Summer and continues through Spring. There are some teaching techniques that can be used with this text. The author's style for showing time, and the character's development.

This would not be my top pick for a graphic novel. The illustrations were not appealing, and the delivery of story did not capture my interest. Tales From the Farm is a problem book in a graphic novel.
